Hitachi Chillers Case Study - Crowne Plaza Hotel Hobart

Hobart’s first Crowne Plaza hotel will enjoy the benefits of combining Hitachi Modular Chillers with Temperzone's low height chilled water fan coil units to provide a unique solution to their cooling and heating requirements.

The project consisted of 8x Hitachi Samurai Air-Cooled Screw Chillers located on the roof which were connected to 250x IMDL fan-cooled indoor units, one in each of the guest rooms spanning 5 floors, as well as the common areas.

The Hitachi Chiller’s small footprints were just one of the reasons Nicholas Stolp, Associate & Senior Mechanical Engineer from JMG Engineers, thought they were ideal for the project. The other reason was that the Hitachi Modular Chillers couple well and run in series. JMG has completed several projects with Hitachi Chillers in the past and understands that they are a quality brand that performs well within Tasmanian conditions.

By combining the two HVAC brands of Hitachi and Temperzone to this project, we were able to offer a unique quality solution to the client. The IMDL fan coil units are ideal for hotel rooms and any application where space is at a premium and their low profile allowed suitability to fit into tight spaces. The Hitachi Modular Chillers provided high-efficiency, flexible outdoor units that could be installed to suit the building's current configuration.

The Crowne Plaza was constructed on top of the Myer building, providing 5 levels of accommodation including 231 guest rooms, conference facilities and a sky bar on the top level, offering stunning views of Hobart city. After being almost demolished due to a fire in 2007, then flooding in 2016, the historic Myer building continues to stand tall with the newly established Crowne Plaza Hotel on top is proof of its resilience and determination.
