Ton: unit of measure

A Ton is a performance indicator that describes how much heat the AC unit can remove from an indoor space in one hour. The value of the unit in Tons indicates its cooling capacity. It can also be used to indicate heating capacity.

Before air conditioners existed, people used blocks of ice to cool their homes and businesses. The ice absorbed the heat, melting as it warmed. From this time comes the use of tons to measure cooling capacity, since a ton refers to the amount of heat needed to completely melt one ton of ice.

The other three most common ways are other ways of measuring or stating the capacity of the unit which may be converted from Tons are:
1 Ton = 3.5168525kW
1 Ton = 12,000 BTU
1 Ton = 4.7162 HP
