The place: Casino in popular beach destination needs to replace of invasive chiller
The Gran Casino Corralejo is located in Las Palmas, the largest city on Fuertaventura island in the Canaries archipelago, a favorite holidays destination known for its gorgeous coastal scenery and year-long mild climate.
The casino offers Black Jack, Poker and American Roulette table for visitors in the main gambling room. More than 70 slots machines are also accessible. A small relaxing bar complements the venue for those looking to take a break from the busy gambling atmosphere.
Before the HVAC retrofit, a water-source chiller was installed in a dedicated equipment room. The aging chiller, in addition to occupying a large amount of valuable indoor space, was also causing noise disturbance.
The Casino management decided it was time to replace the chiller and take this opportunity to completely upgrade the HVAC installation.

The Hitachi Cooling & Heating solution meets the casino’s needs today and beyond, by replacing the outdated chiller with a VRF system
- Thanks to its compact design, one 50HP SET FREE SIGMA top-flow unit could cover the casino’s heat demand and could be placed outdoors, is now placed on the rooftop of the building. It means the previous chiller room could be freed and transformed into a storage room. Additionally, the outdoor location of the compressor unit drastically reduced the noise disturbance of the HVAC system, bringing quiet cooling and heating to the casino for the first time.
- The chosen SET FREE SIGMA system came with superior seasonal energy efficiency, with a SEER of 7.30 and a SCOP of 4.26, resulting in annual energy savings for the casino compared with the previous chiller installation.
- For the indoor units, five Hitachi high-ESP ducted units were set to an External Static Pressure of 220Pa. They enabled engineers to re-use the existing ductwork inside the casino, minimizing installation cost and disturbance during the re-fit work.
During peak season, The Gran Casino Corralejo often becomes crowded. Keeping the clients comfortable not only requires effective cooling, but also ventilation of the space for sufficient air renewal. That’s why four KPI ventilation units were installed throughout the facility. With heat recovery technology, the KPI ventilation units bring in fresh air from outside and pre-condition it through an energy recovery heat exchange process with exhaust air. This enables the casino to improve indoor air quality for occupants reducing fatigue and improving concentration for gamblers, while minimizing the impact on energy bills.
The VRF system and ventilation units were all connected to Hitachi CS-LITE system; a software and hardware-based remote management solution.
