Kensington International Kindergarten | Hitachi VRF project in Bangkok, Thailand

VRF

The place: Award-winning pre-school provides British-style early child education

Offering to children from 1 to 5 years old, The Kensington International Kindergarten is a safe, clean and stimulating environment, having won amongst other recognitions the Best International Nursery Award in 2019.

The institution operates in an outstanding architectural learning space. The layout consists of an oval-like free-form building housing classrooms and indoor playrooms. In the center a green oasis allows the children to go back and forth between the indoor and natural outdoor environments.

In Bangkok, the majority of days face a temperature above 30˚C with annual peaks close to 40 ˚C. On top of the hot temperatures, humidity is also high; the average annual average humidity rate is 73%(1), which is above the maximum 65% threshold recommended by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for thermal comfort and air quality.

Due to the tropical weather conditions, the choice of a reliable air conditioning was critical to preserve the wellbeing of the children, so they can grow and play in a comfortable environment.

The solution: Hitachi VRF keeps the kids cool in the tropical climate

Recognized for its great energy saving technology, Hitachi VRF is particularly suited for education facilities. It enables cooling of multiple zones with individual operation of each indoor unit. This means that the AC can be turned off in the vacant classrooms while occupied rooms are being cooled, each with a distinct preferred temperature.

For the Kensington International Kindergarten, the CNCQ cooling-only series of SET FREE SIGMA modular top-flow range was chosen.

  • The CNCQ series can sustain continuous cooling operation up to 48˚C ambient, so it matches the requirements of Bangkok’s hot climate.
  • Hitachi air conditioning does not only control the indoor temperature but also dehumidifies the air, so the children can feel free fresh and cool indoors.
  • The exclusive Sigma-shaped (Σ) heat exchanger inside the outdoor unit contributes to top-class energy efficiency levels, reducing the building cooling costs and carbon footprint.

A total of 10 SET FREE SIGMA units were placed on the rooftop of the kindergarten building, for a total of 184HP. Some 84 Hitachi VRF indoor units were installed, most of them wall-mounted units offering great simplicity of installation.

The system was completed with a Central Station EX, a convenient central monitoring panel enabling multi-zone management of the air conditioning operation.
