KPI

2-way Energy Recovery Ventilation Unit

KPI is a 2-way energy recovery ventilation (ERV) solution which exchanges energy between the exhaust air and the incoming fresh air, so that the AC system does not have to work as hard.
KPI_0

Reduce annual electricity consumption by up to 79%

Normally, ventilation will significantly increase the loading on the AC because it has to work much harder to condition the incoming fresh air to the set temperature indoors. However, the KPI unit is able to reduce annual electricity consumption by up to 79%[1] compared to using a normal ventilation exhaust fan, because the incoming fresh air is pre-conditioned to be closer to the set temperature indoors.

KPI_1

Energy recovery ventilation

The KPI unit works through an energy-recovery process that efficiently transfers the energy between the indoor and outdoor air streams without mixing them. It achieves this through use of a cross-flow sheet made of ultra-thin celluloid material.

Suitable for both VRF and commercial split systems

Because it does not connect to any refrigerant system to pre-condition the air, it can be used in both VRF and commercial split systems through a ducted connection and can continue to operate effectively when the AC system is switched off.

Three different energy recovery modes are supported:
• Automatic Mode switches the ERV function on or off based on the gap between the set temperature, the indoor temperature and the incoming fresh air temperature. It automatically manages the ERV in order to maximize energy efficiency.
• Forced Exchange Mode ensures the ERV function is always on so that energy recovery is always performed
• Bypass Mode means that the ERV function is never performed and the outdoor fresh air is distributed into the indoor space without adjusting the air temperature.

Additionally, in all modes it is possible to set the fan speeds individually, creating air pressurization in a room to avoid smoke and pollution transfer from one room to another. Either the supply fan or the exhaust can be increased one step higher than the other to create pressurization or de-pressurization.

KPI_3

Air filtration and CO2 monitoring

The unit comes with G3 filters fitted to both the air inlet and outlet, with the option to add an additional F7 filter at the final air treatment stage. An optional CO2 sensor can be installed to enable more precise control of the ventilation based on the levels of CO2 detected indoors.

KPI_4

Near-silent operation

The expanded polystyrene (EPS) internal structure has been designed to reduce the weight of the unit and the degree of air resistance. Combined with the use of highly-efficient EC fan motors, this has the effect of reducing the noise generated by the unit. In fact, KPI energy recovery ventilation units can run as low as 24dB(A) noise levels[2]. The EC fan motors themselves are up to 50% more energy efficient than normal fan motors[3].

KPI_5

Connect to a Central Station controller

Control of KPI units can be fully integrated with an Hitachi VRF system using H-LINK wiring and a Central Station controller, making it easier to operate and monitor ventilation and air conditioning as an integrated system.

Notes

1. Calculations based on KPI-10002E3E working at nominal air flow rate using EN14825 standard to set working hours vs outdoor temperatures through the cooling and heating seasons. During cooling season an indoor nominal temperature of 27C (DB) and indoor nominal RH of 47% was assumed. Heating season indoor temperature of 20C (DB) and RH of 60% was assumed. Calculation determined that over cooling season a sensible cooling capacity totaling 4,402kW/h was required without the KPI unit to recover the ventilation effect on the indoor temperature, while with KPI operational the same number was 950kW/h. For heating the same figures were 26,172kW/h and 5,428kW/h respectively.
2. Refers to KPI-252E3E model working at 180m3/h
3. Comparing previous generation KPI-1002E2E model without EC fan motors and KPI-1002E3E model with EC fan motors working at 1000m3/h at 140Pa. IPT was reduced from 580W to 285W.
