Delta University Hospital | Hitachi VRF in Mansoura, Egypt

VRF

The place: A newly built 8,000sqm hospital by Delta University

After opening the world’s biggest dental hospital in 2022, the Delta University for Science and Technology opened a brand-new general hospital in 2023 with 91 rooms. In addition to treating patients, the hospital is also a learning site for students at the recently established University’s Faculty of Medicine.

Located in the Egyptian Delta region, 4km from the southern Mediterranean seaside, the new hospital requires cooling 24hours, 365 days a year, due to hot weather and critical temperature control requirements for patient treatments.

More importantly, several operating rooms have specialist HVAC needs: the room temperature must be maintained at no more than 19˚C during surgery, while sufficient ventilation must be provided to keep the air clear of viruses and bacteria. For these rooms, the university’s engineering team decided to install large high performance air handling units (AHU) with medical-grade HEPA filters and ventilation.

Therefore, the hospital demanded two types of cooling systems: one for the regular hospital’s rooms, and one for the operating rooms’ AHU.

The solution: Total of 612HP VRF installed, with SideSmart for operating rooms and AHUs and SET FREE SIGMA for the rest of the facilities

For the entire hospital except the operating rooms, the engineering team had specified that top-flow VRF would be adequate. SET FREE Sigma by Hitachi Cooling & Heating FSNSE series was preferred. Cooling continuity being essential, they trusted the high quality standards of this VRF range made in Spain and certified with Eurovent. A total of 14 SET FREE Sigma units were installed on the building rooftop, combined with 46 Ducted and Ducted Compact concealed indoor units.

All the refrigerant systems were connected via H-LINK to CSNet Web manager, a web-based centralized monitoring solution that enables operational data to be stored on a local on-site server. With this solution, the hospital’s engineering staff can easily oversee the AC operation and be notified of errors at any time.

For the operating rooms' air handling units (6 AHU of 54HP each), powerful cooling and ventilation was necessary. Initially the building’s engineers had planned for rooftop packaged units. However, getting to know the capabilities of SideSmart they decided that this unique slim modular VRF was a better option. SideSmart offers very high energy efficiency levels (COP up to 4.27*) with modules that can be combined to reach up to 72 HP system capacity. To fuel cooling power in the AHUs, fifteen Hitachi DX-Kits were used to connect the AHUs to the VRF system.

“Usually side-flow units are considered for small residential applications but not for large commercial projects. The air365 SideSmart VRF is a unique solution, as it is slim and flexible, yet offers the cooling capacity needed by commercial facilities like the Delta University’s hospital” says Eratec.

Due to the proximity with the sea, both SET FREE Sigma and SideSmart units were provided with an anti-corrosion treatment for better durability of the equipment.

“The client is very satisfied with the AC. It’s very quiet and ensures pleasant cooling throughout the entire hospital”.
